Yogini /yoh–guh-nee/: female yoga practitioner
Yogi /yoh-gee/: male yoga practitioner
Yoga /yoh-guh/: to unite
Sanskrit yuj: to add, to join, to unite
An ancient practice of meditation, yoga evolved to include postures or asanas (as the third limb of the Eight-Limbed path of Patanjali’s yoga, a sage who wrote The Yoga Sutra, one of the six classic yoga philosophies) geared towards preparing the body for sustained periods of meditation. Current yogic cultivations range from pure physical practice to shades of combinatory styles.
Several relevant branches of yoga include:
- Bhakti Yoga//Devotion
- Hatha Yoga//Physical Exercise
- Jnana Yoga//Wisdom
- Karma Yoga//Service
- Mantra Yoga//Sound
- Raja Yoga//Meditation
This series of flowers will focus on Hatha Yoga postures, highlighting various asanas along my journey as a yogini. Concomitant with my PhD in Kinesiology: the study of the human body in motion, initial focus will be on the anatomy of poses in a effort to enlighten future yogic endeavors.
Surya Namaskar // Sun Salutation
Intertwined with the breath as a vinyasa style of postures, this sequence is traditionally performed at sunrise in salute to the sun & as a way of awakening the chakras. Though various sequences of asanas exist (usually as an inclusion of alternative postures conducive to one’s current physical status), we will examine the following 7even stances:
